What this photo carries
No removable metadata found in the supported container blocks. This does not prove the picture is anonymous.
Image dimensions and required decoding information remain.
JPEG, PNG and still WebP. Up to 100 photos, 128 MB each.

How to remove EXIF data from a photo
Open your photos
Drop one photo or a batch of JPEG, PNG and still WebP files. Nothing is uploaded, and the original files remain where they are.
Inspect the hidden fields
The panel calls out camera, date, GPS, software, comments and colour information. Select a file in the strip to compare the batch.
Clean, verify and save a copy
Choose whether orientation and colour should stay. Clean the photo, inspect the checked copy and save it. Your original is never overwritten.
What the cleaner shows you
Metadata is easier to remove safely when you can see the decision first. The field list groups the details that most often travel with a photo.
| Field | Why it matters | Default treatment |
|---|---|---|
| GPS location | Can reveal where the camera was when the photo was taken. | Removed from the clean copy. |
| Camera and lens | Identifies a device or a shooting setup. | Removed from the clean copy. |
| Capture date and software | Shows when the photo was made or edited. | Removed from the clean copy. |
| Orientation | Tells some viewers how to turn the pixels upright. | Kept only when you leave the option on. |
| Colour profile | Helps display the same colours. Can contain descriptive text. | Kept by default. Untick for the stricter clean. |
Why the image is not re-encoded
JPEG, PNG and WebP keep their image data in compressed chunks. The cleaner copies those chunks into a new container while leaving the pixel payload alone.
That is different from opening an image on a canvas and saving it again. A canvas route can change JPEG quantisation, transparency, colour profiles and file size. The panel says which display fields you kept, so the clean copy has a visible audit trail.
Use the options when a phone photo needs to stay upright
Many phones store pixels in sensor order and add an orientation tag. Leave Keep photo orientation on when the file will be opened by software that relies on that tag. Turn it off when removing every recognised EXIF field matters more than older viewers.
Colour profiles follow the same tradeoff. A profile can improve colour matching, but it is embedded data too. Keep it for a colour-managed workflow, or turn it off for a stricter clean copy.
In our October 2026 checks, all 13 supported format fixtures retained identical decoded pixels with the default display options. The test method and limitations explain what that result covers.
Using the image metadata cleaner
Open a photo
Drop one file or several into the stage. You can open up to 100 photos, 128 MB each, within a 256 MB batch. Try a safe sample opens an illustration with invented metadata.
| Control | Effect |
|---|---|
| Choose photos / Add more | Opens JPEG, PNG and still WebP. Add more also offers paste and files from your phone through File Transfer. |
| Your batch | Selects another file. Each photo has a remove button. Arrow keys move between focused photos, and Delete removes one. |
| Clear | Cancels processing, releases the batch from memory and returns to the drop zone. |
Read the field list
Original shows the source fields with a To remove label. After cleaning, Cleaned copy shows only the retained fields. These views inspect container data, not hidden messages in the pixels.
Location and identity fields come first. Open More embedded details to inspect the remaining container blocks.
Clean and verify
Press Clean photo for the selected file, or Clean all photos for the batch. The output is read back and its encoded image payload is compared byte for byte. Changing a display option clears every result so the batch stays consistent.
| Choice | What stays |
|---|---|
| Keep photo orientation | A newly built direction tag when needed, without the original EXIF block. Turning it off may make a photo look sideways. |
| Keep colour profile | The original ICC profile, including any descriptive text inside it. Turning it off can change colour appearance. |
| Keep original filename | Adds -clean to the original name. Off by default, so the output is named photo-clean-01 with the right extension. |
Save or pass the result on
Save cleaned photo saves one copy. A batch offers one ZIP or separate files through the Save menu. Save this photo takes the selected result. Open in and Share use the clean file too.
Narrow, Wide or Full at the top right of the tool gives you more room.
Keyboard shortcuts
The shared file shortcuts work in this tool too.
| Keys | Action |
|---|---|
| ⌘ O or Ctrl O | Choose another photo. |
| ⌘ V or Ctrl V | Paste an image from the clipboard. |
| ⌘ S or Ctrl S | Save the available clean copy. |
What it will not do
It refuses HEIC, AVIF, TIFF, RAW, CMYK JPEG, multi-picture or HDR gain-map JPEG, animated PNG and animated WebP. Convert those with a suitable image editor first. It does not remove visible identifying details, steganography or sidecar files. Required image structure, dimensions and numeric display information remain.
Your original, its filename and its photo-library records are untouched. The copy gets a neutral name unless you choose otherwise. Your operating system still assigns filesystem dates when you save it.
Frequently asked questions
Does removing EXIF data reduce image quality?
The encoded image data stays identical, so there is no new compression loss. This cleaner does not draw onto a canvas or save a new JPEG. Leave colour profile and photo orientation on to retain those display details. Removing a colour profile can change how some viewers show the colours.
Can it remove GPS location from a photo?
Yes. It removes the original EXIF and XMP blocks, including their location fields. Readable EXIF coordinates appear as plain text before cleaning. The output is checked again before saving. No map or location lookup is loaded. A retained ICC profile may contain descriptive text, so untick colour profile for the stricter result.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read with the browser File API and the cleaned bytes are assembled in this tab. The site can still load its normal public-page analytics, but it does not send the photo, its filename, its metadata or its coordinates as an event.
Which image formats can I clean?
JPEG, PNG and still WebP. JPEG and PNG keep their compressed image data. Animated PNG and animated WebP are refused because removing a chunk without validating every frame could change the file. HEIC, AVIF, TIFF and RAW files are outside this first release.
Does a clean photo become anonymous?
No. Metadata is only one source of identifying information. A face, sign, document, visible landmark, filename, file-system timestamp or hidden steganographic message can still identify a picture. Clean the embedded fields, then inspect the visible image and the name you share.
