How to make a GIF from a video or photos

  1. Choose your source

Open one video, an existing GIF or a set of photos. Try a sample to explore the editor first.

  2. Shape your loop

Keep the right clip, arrange your images and set the pace. Crop the canvas or add a caption.

  3. Preview, then save

Make GIF to see the encoded animation and its exact size. Download the result when you are happy with it.

Using the GIF loop studio

The composition preview shows your edits. Make GIF creates the actual animation so you can judge its colour and file size.

Your source files and frames

Choose files opens one video or a set of images. You can also drop files on the preview area.

ControlWhat it does
Try a sampleReplaces your current sources with twelve generated frames of a bouncing character. The sample can be edited and exported.
Add imagesAdds still images or GIF frames to an image sequence. A video and photos cannot share one sequence.
Source frame cardsSelect a frame to preview it. Drag to reorder, or use Move earlier and Move later. Remove deletes that frame from this tab.
Frame delay, msSets how long a source frame stays visible, from 20 to 10,000 milliseconds. Playback speed scales these delays.
New image delaySets the initial delay for added still images. Imported GIFs keep their own timing. Apply delay to every frame overwrites all current delays.
Clear sourcesRemoves the current media and output. Your files on disk stay untouched. Choose files again to replace a video.
Focus modeExpands the studio. Narrow, Wide and Full set the panel width. Done or Escape returns to this page.

Previewing and trimming a video

Start time and End time choose the clip in seconds. Drag the two handles on the shared timeline to adjust that range. The preview shows the source frame at the handle you move. You can also focus a handle and use the arrow keys.

  • Play loop / Pause loop plays the composition. The Preview position slider moves through the planned frames. Video seeking may make this preview run slower than the exported GIF.
  • Frame rate samples a video at 5 to 30 fps. It does not change the delays of imported image or GIF frames.
  • Playback speed changes the pace from 0.5× to 2×. GIF delays are rounded to 10 ms, with a 20 ms minimum.
  • Direction selects Forward, Reverse or Back & forth. The return trip adds interior frames and increases loop duration.
  • Repeat plays forever, once, twice or three times. The encoded GIF carries this setting, though a receiving app may handle it differently.

Shape, crop and empty space

Canvas shape selects the original aspect ratio, square, landscape or portrait. Mixed images use the first frame’s shape when Original is selected.

ControlEffect
Longest edgeSets the larger output dimension, from 128 to 960 pixels. Enlarging a small source cannot restore detail.
Fill & cropFills the canvas and trims any excess. Drag the preview or use Horizontal crop and Vertical crop to move the shared focal point.
Fit whole imageKeeps every part of the source. Different aspect ratios leave empty space.
Empty spaceFills gaps and source transparency with White or Dark, or preserves one-bit transparency. GIF cannot preserve partially transparent pixels.

Captions that stay readable

Caption text adds the same words to every frame. The text wraps to at most two lines and scales long lines to fit.

  • Caption style chooses Clean, Meme or Below image. Below image reserves a dark strip within the output canvas.
  • Text position places an overlay at the Top or Bottom. Below image uses its own position.
  • Text size sets the font size as 3% to 10% of canvas width. White text has a dark outline.

Colour, size targets and export

Balanced, Small file and Smooth set starting values for dimensions, video frame rate, colours and dithering. Your crop and caption stay in place.

ControlWhat to expect
Maximum coloursAllows 32, 64, 128 or 256 colours per frame. A transparent frame reserves one entry for transparency.
Smooth gradients (dithering)Uses error diffusion to soften visible colour bands. It may add grain and increase file size. Flat artwork often looks cleaner without it.
Fit to file sizeTests up to six encodes against a binary KiB or MiB target. It may reduce the longest edge and colour count, down to 32 pixels and 32 colours. It keeps frame timing.
Make GIFEncodes locally, shows progress and opens the actual GIF preview. Cancel export stops the work and keeps your sources.
Back to editing / View encoded GIFSwitches between the composition and encoded result. Play encoded GIF / Pause encoded GIF controls the output preview.
Download GIFSaves floi-loop.gif. The size summary reports actual bytes and any fitting reductions. Changing an edit invalidates the output until you make it again.

A target that cannot be met is labelled Over your size target. You can still save that result, choose a larger target or shorten the loop yourself.

Keyboard controls

Focus the composition preview to control playback or crop position. Standard arrow keys also work on sliders and select menus.

KeyEffect
SpacePlay or pause the composition when its canvas has focus.
Arrow keysMove the shared crop focal point by 2% when Fill & crop is selected.
Shift + arrowMove the crop focal point by 10%.
EscapeLeave Focus mode and keep your edits.

What this tool will not do

It does not download website URLs, combine video with photos, add sound, generate AI animation or export MP4. Animated WebP and APNG inputs become still images. GIFs are re-encoded, so their original palettes and metadata are not preserved.

Sources are limited to 200 files and 200 MB in total. Photos and video frames must be below 40 megapixels. Existing GIFs must be below 4 megapixels; imported GIF frames are resized to at most 960 pixels on the longest edge.

The editor allows up to 600 source and output frames, 160 MiB of retained decoded GIF pixels and 64 MiB of encoded output. A video selection can span up to 30 seconds. The final loop can last up to 120 seconds. Your browser may run out of memory sooner.

Video formats and browser support

Video support depends on your browser’s codecs. A MOV from a phone may use HEVC and fail where an H.264 MP4 works. Large footage, many photos and size fitting can take time, especially on a phone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert an MP4 video to GIF?

Yes, if your browser can decode the video. MP4 with H.264 video is a useful starting point. Choose the start and end times, set the frame rate, then select Make GIF. WebM and some MOV files work too. A filename extension does not guarantee codec support.

How do I make a GIF from images?

Choose several JPG, PNG or WebP images together. They enter the editor in selection order. Drag the frame cards or use their arrow buttons to reorder them. Each card has its own delay in milliseconds. Choose a common canvas shape to keep the output dimensions consistent.

Can I reverse or edit an existing animated GIF?

Yes. Import a GIF to open its composited frames with their delays. Remove or reorder frames, add a caption, change the shape, or choose Reverse. Back & forth plays forward and returns through the interior frames without doubling the endpoints. Existing GIFs are limited to 4 megapixels and the decoded-memory budget.

How can I make my GIF smaller?

Start with Small file, shorten the clip or choose a smaller Longest edge. Fewer colours can help too. Fit to file size tests actual encodes and may lower dimensions and colours. The result shows the settings it used and whether it met your target. It cannot guarantee every target is possible.

Is this GIF maker free with no watermark?

Yes. You can make and download GIFs without an account or an added watermark. Your source files and output are processed in your browser. If you sign in, your typed caption and general settings save automatically to your private account. Files, previews and frame data do not enter that account.

Can I make a GIF from a YouTube link or keep its sound?

No. Open a video file you already have permission to use. This tool does not fetch YouTube or other website URLs. A GIF file cannot contain an audio track. Keep a video format when sound is part of the message.
