How to blur a video online

  1. Open a video

Choose an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV. Your clip stays on your device. Try an example to explore with fictional details.

  2. Cover the private detail

Draw an area. Choose its effect and time range. Choose Follow automatically for tracking, or place movement points yourself. Review the result.

  3. Save, then review

Press Save video. Play the actual result in Saved video. Check the whole clip and listen before sharing it.

A guide to the privacy studio

Think of each area as a rectangular cover. Choose what it hides, when it appears and how it moves. Make one area for each detail that needs its own timing or movement.

Choose an example to try

These examples use made-up contact details. Try opens the matching example in the studio and replaces the video open in this tab. Models load only when you press Track.

Hide a fixed screen label

A browser address stays in the same place for the whole recording. A single stationary cover is enough.

  1. Draw over the complete text, with a little extra space.
  2. Choose Solid cover and leave Movement as Stay in one place.
  3. Leave Start at 0 and End at the clip’s end. Play, then save.

Follow a moving subject

A face, a house in drone footage or a moving card changes position in the picture. Let a model place the positions.

  1. Draw around one whole subject on a clear frame.
  2. Choose Follow automatically. Set Start and End, then press Go to area start.
  3. Fit the box around the subject at that frame. Press Track this area. Play its whole range and correct any drift.
  4. Press I’ve reviewed this area, then save.

Place movement yourself

You want exact control, or tracking keeps drifting. Give the cover two or more position points.

  1. Choose Move between points. Place the box over the detail on the first frame.
  2. Seek to a later frame. Move or resize the box over the detail again. This adds a point.
  3. The box moves between those positions. Check the frames between them and add points where it misses.

Cover a panel that jumps

A panel moves instantly to another part of the screen. A sliding cover would expose it during the change.

  1. Choose Jump between points. Place the first box.
  2. Seek to the first frame where the panel is in its new place. Move the box there.
  3. The example jumps at 3.00 seconds. Step through that boundary and check both sides.

Start and End are different from position points

Start and End: when it appears

Start 1 and End 4 show the cover from 1.00 seconds until just before 4.00. The whole video is still saved.

Position points: where it goes

A point at 1.00 can put the box on the left. A point at 3.00 can put it on the right. Movement decides how it gets there.

Pausing at 6 seconds and drawing does not set Start to 6. A new area initially covers the whole clip. To cover a house only from 6.00 to 9.60, enter those Start and End values explicitly.

MomentStart 1, End 4, points at 1 and 3
Before 1.00The area is hidden.
1.00 to 3.00Move between points slides the box from its first position to its second. Jump between points holds the first position.
At 3.00The box reaches the second position, or jumps there.
3.00 to just before 4.00The box stays at the second position.
At 4.00The area is hidden again. End excludes its frame.

Read and edit the position points

The numbered time buttons appear only for manual movement. Each stores the box’s position and size at that moment. A button such as 2 · 0:05.40 means the second point is at 5.40 seconds.

  • Click a time to inspect that point. Move or resize the box to change it.
  • Seek to a different time and move the box to add another point automatically.
  • Add point at current time saves the same position at another moment. Use this to keep the box still before a later move.
  • Remove current point removes the point at the displayed time. At least one position must remain.

For example, keep the same box at 0 and 2 seconds, then put it somewhere else at 3 seconds. Move between points holds it still until 2, then moves it during the next second. Adding a point does not change Start or End.

Run tracking and correct a path

Choose Follow automatically to reveal model and tracking controls. Press Go to area start to reach the first frame in the area. Fit the box around one whole subject before pressing Track this area.

The time beside that button shows the current playhead and End. Tracking runs forwards from the playhead. Starting halfway through does not analyse earlier frames. Narrow text strips can drift; a whole panel or manual points may be easier to check.

  • Extra cover on each edge adds a 20% margin by default. Wider cover can hide more background.
  • Stop tracking or Cancel stops the run and keeps the previous edit.
  • Go to review seeks to the path’s start, a correction or a point that needs attention.
  • To correct drift, pause and move or resize the automatic box. Earlier positions stay. Later guesses are cleared, so the correction holds until End. Press Track from here to continue.
  • Play the complete range again. Press I’ve reviewed this area only after checking it. Editing the area asks for another review.

The manual point editor stays hidden during automatic tracking. Switching a completed path to a manual mode starts from the current box. Undo restores the automatic path.

Compare the models and understand tracking limits
ModelWhy choose it
NanoTrack v3Default. 2.6 MB. Highest average box overlap in our two public face sequences.
NanoTrack v21.8 MB. Faster in those tests, with slightly lower average overlap. It did better on a synthetic distractor clip.
ViTTrack0.7 MB. Smallest and fastest in those tests. Lower average overlap on the face sequences.

The first run also loads about 12 MB for the shared runtime from floi’s model host. Your video stays in this tab. The guide explains our measured results and their limits.

Tracking analyses up to 30 frames per second at a maximum 960-pixel analysis edge. Export retains source frame timing and interpolates boxes between samples. The cover never shrinks below its initial selected size.

Some uncertain targets and obvious scene changes pause tracking. The cover then holds its last position to End. A high score can still accompany a wrong path. Neither a finished run nor a review acknowledgement proves privacy.

Open, draw and choose an effect

Choose a video, drop it anywhere on the page or paste a file. In Masked view, drag over a detail to create an area. Add area places a central box instead. Select an area’s number, then drag it or its corner handles.

ControlWhat it changes
Solid coverReplaces the selected pixels with an opaque rectangle. Choose it for names, passwords and readable private text.
Blur / PixelateSoftens detail or replaces it with blocks. Strength changes the amount. These effects can leave identifying clues.
Exact position & sizeLeft, Top, Area width and Area height as percentages. These fields work without drawing.
Remove area / Undo / RedoRemove or reverse area edits, including timing and tracking changes.

You can use up to 24 areas. Leave a margin. Open another replaces the video and its areas. Clear returns to the drop zone. Files and paths stay in this tab, so save your result before closing or reloading it.

ControlHow to use it
MaskedEdit the current covers. Selection borders, handles and area numbers are not saved.
OriginalCompare the source without covers. This view does not change the areas applied by Save.
Saved videoThe actual encoded file, available after Save video. Changing an edit clears this older result.
Preview position / Play previewSeek with the slider, then play or pause. Use the displayed time to orient yourself.
Previous frame / Next frameInspect individual source frames, including clips with variable frame rates.
Start here / End here / Whole videoUse the displayed time as a boundary, or restore the full range. To include the current frame at End, step to the next frame first.
Timing laneDrag an edge to resize the time range. Drag its middle to shift it. Its label selects the area.
Sound on/offPreview sound only. Use Remove audio from saved video to change the export. A silent source has disabled sound controls.
Narrow / Wide / FullChange the studio’s space. Output dimensions stay the same. Close (×) or Escape returns from focus mode.

Understand why Save is unavailable

The Next step strip explains the current reason. Follow automatically needs a completed path and your review before Save becomes available.

  • No areas: draw a box or use Add area.
  • Tracking not run: press Track this area, or choose another movement.
  • Review needed: inspect every automatic area, then mark each as reviewed.
  • Invalid time range: use a Start before End, within the source duration.
  • Output unavailable: wait for the encoder check, then choose an available format or remove audio.

For manual covers, play the edit before saving even though no acknowledgement is required. Check just before and after each area’s range.

Review, then save or share

Save video creates a new file and opens Saved video. Your original stays unchanged. Play that encoded result through and listen before sharing.

What it will not do

You select each subject. The tool does not find every face, plate or text block. Covers remain rectangular. Occlusion, narrow text and scene changes can defeat tracking. Neither tracking nor manual points guarantee anonymity.

Clips must be SDR, up to 300 MB, five minutes and 8.8 megapixels per frame. Output has a maximum 1920-pixel long edge. Memory and codec support can impose lower limits. Tracking also needs worker video decoding and canvas support. Manual movement remains available when it cannot run.

The result keeps only the primary picture and optional primary sound. Additional tracks and embedded subtitles are omitted. Export is not a certified metadata scrubber. Consider cutting an interval out if the detail does not need to appear at all.

Frequently asked questions

How do I blur part of a video?

Open the clip and draw a rectangle over the detail. Choose Blur or Pixelate, then set its Start and End in seconds. For names, numbers or readable screen text, use Solid cover instead. Save a new file and review it before sharing.

Can I blur a moving face or number plate?

Yes. Draw a box around one subject on a clear frame, then choose Follow automatically in Movement. Press Go to area start, then Track this area. Choose NanoTrack v3, NanoTrack v2 or ViTTrack. The model follows your selected box locally. It does not find every face or plate. Review the path, correct drift and retrack from a correction. Manual movement points remain available.

Can I hide something for just a few seconds?

Yes. Each area has its own Start and End. Drag its timing-lane edges, enter seconds or use Start here and End here. Start is included; End is excluded. Keep extra time around an appearance when you are unsure of the boundary.

Is blur enough to hide private text?

A blur can leave letter shapes, colour and context visible. Pixelation can also leave clues. A solid cover replaces the selected pixels with an opaque rectangle. Leave a margin and check every appearance, including reflections and repeated details.

Does it remove sound or change video quality?

The picture is re-encoded, so the export is not lossless. The primary sound stays unless you choose Remove audio from saved video. A compatible AAC or Opus track is copied; other sound is converted when supported. Other audio tracks and subtitle tracks are omitted.

Is there a watermark, account requirement or upload?

No watermark or account is required. The video, masks, tracking path and encoded result stay in this browser tab. Tracking fetches your chosen model and a shared runtime from floi’s model host. These requests contain no video. Only output preferences can save to your optional account. The limits are 300 MB, five minutes and an SDR source up to 8.8 megapixels. Browser memory and codec support can impose lower limits.
