You can, and for a quick grab it is fine. Three things are different. A system screenshot takes your whole screen or window, so you crop afterwards and lose both time and pixels. It picks up overlays, cursors and notifications. And it gives you no quick way to take a series of frames. Live Capture takes only the shared surface, keeps every capture in a gallery, and exports them one at a time or as a single ZIP.
Screen capture is bounded by your display. If you need the video's true encoded resolution, you need the file itself. That means 4K stills from a 4K upload, whatever monitor you have. Download it where you have the right to, then open it in the Video File extractor for frame-accurate stills at native resolution. Users running the optional Pro Mode companion server can pull a source-resolution frame straight from a URL.
Let the video play and move your mouse off the player. YouTube fades the controls out after about three seconds. Capture during that window and the frame is clean. Pausing is what pins the controls on screen, which is why ordinary paused screenshots always include them.
No. Extensions are the usual answer to this because they can reach inside the page, but they also want permission to read every site you visit, and they break whenever YouTube changes its player. This runs as an ordinary web page: you grant one tab for one session, the grant ends when you press Stop sharing, and there is nothing installed to maintain or trust.
Because that is the only way a web page can legitimately read pixels from a YouTube player. The player runs in a cross-origin iframe that pages are forbidden from reading, and YouTube's video servers refuse cross-origin fetches. The Screen Capture API asks you to grant a specific tab or window, and the resulting stream is one your own page is allowed to draw. Nothing is recorded or transmitted. Frames go straight to a canvas in the tab.
Whatever is on screen. To maximise it: set the video to its highest quality in YouTube's settings menu, go fullscreen or use theatre mode, and let it fully buffer at that quality before capturing. On a 4K display in fullscreen you can capture genuine 4K stills.
Not with Live Capture. The Screen Capture API is desktop only. On mobile, use your device's built-in screenshot, or open the Video File extractor if you have the file.
That is DRM protection. A small amount of YouTube content plays through an encrypted media path that blanks out under screen capture. That means rentals, purchases, and some YouTube Movies titles. Ordinary uploads are not affected.
Capturing a frame for private reference, commentary, criticism, news reporting or education is broadly accepted under fair use and similar doctrines, though the specifics vary by country. Republishing frames as your own content is not. When in doubt, ask the creator.
