A little less fixed. A lot more useful.
Open your PDF
Choose a PDF or drop it anywhere on the page. Try the sample to explore a report, columns and a scan.
Make it yours
Review every page. Correct the words, choose your pages and use OCR to make scans editable.
Save a Word file
Save a genuine DOCX. Open it in your word processor and check its layout before sharing.
Using PDF to Word
Open a PDF to see what can become editable text. Nothing is uploaded, and your original file stays unchanged.
Choose your output
Word output gives you three ways to reuse the same document. The preview tells you which parts contain editable words.
| Word output | What you keep | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Editable Word | Editable paragraphs, basic font styles, inferred headings, lists, simple tables and supported raster pictures. | Reading order, font substitutions, table cells and picture positions. The layout is reconstructed. |
| Clean text | Editable words in one simple style. Table rows become text separated by tabs. | Pictures on text pages are omitted. Pages without a text layer still become pictures. |
| Page images | The visible appearance of each selected page as a picture inside a DOCX. | The words are not editable. Pictures are rendered at up to 144 pixels per inch, within memory limits. |
Join words split across lines removes a line-ending hyphen before a lowercase continuation. Check real compound words afterwards. It affects unedited text pages.
Review and correct each page
Choose a page in the strip, use Previous page and Next page, or enter Go to page. Badges distinguish embedded text, OCR and scans without text.
- Word preview shows the reconstructed content. Click a paragraph or table cell to correct its words.
- Original shows the unchanged PDF page. Compare puts both views together; narrow windows stack them.
- Reset page edits restores the current page’s extracted text or OCR result. Other pages keep their edits.
The preview follows the document’s reading flow. Word can wrap lines differently. Editing a paragraph keeps its first text style; untouched paragraphs keep their extracted styles.
Choose your pages
Leave Pages to convert blank for the whole document. Enter a selection such as 1, 3-5 and press Apply.
Page numbers refer to positions in the PDF, starting at 1. Invalid entries keep the last valid selection. The faded page cards remain available to review.
Keep original page breaks starts each selected PDF page in a new Word section. Turn it off for continuous text. Word may add pages when text wraps; picture pages always keep separate sections.
Make scans editable
Read scans with OCR recognises words on selected pages that have no embedded text. Without OCR, those pages are saved as pictures.
- Choose English, French, German, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese in Scan language.
- Press Read scans with OCR. The first run loads the engine and language model from
models.floi.dev. - Compare the result with Original. Correct important words and numbers before saving.
Recognition happens on your device. Its confidence value is an engine estimate, not a correctness score. OCR rebuilds plain paragraphs and does not recreate a scan’s tables or typefaces.
Stop keeps completed OCR pages. Read remaining scans again when ready. A blank page may still have no words after recognition.
Save and keep working
Save Word file creates one DOCX with the selected pages, in PDF order. Open it in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice or another DOCX reader and inspect the result.
| Control | What happens |
|---|---|
| Open in | Passes the Word result to another compatible floi tool beside this one. |
| Share | Offers File Transfer, the system share sheet or other supported sharing options. |
| Open another | Opens a different PDF. A file that cannot open leaves your current document intact. |
| Clear | Discards this document and returns to the file picker. |
| Stop | Stops opening, OCR or export. Finished OCR pages and your existing edits stay available. |
Use ⌘O or Ctrl+O to open a PDF, and ⌘S or Ctrl+S to save. Narrow, Wide or Full at the top right opens a focused workspace. Minimise keeps the document on the desk.
Save before reloading or closing the tab. Files, passwords, recognised text and corrections stay in tab memory. Only your output, cleanup, page-break and language preferences can save to your account.
What the tool will not do
It cannot promise an exact editable copy of every PDF. A PDF describes where marks go; Word needs paragraphs, cells and a reading order.
- One PDF at a time, up to 100 MB and 500 pages. Each export contains up to 200 pages.
- Up to 50 selected scan pages per OCR run. Extraction and edits are limited to 5 million characters.
- Page rendering stays within 8 megapixels and 8,192 pixels per side. Exported pictures are limited to 120 MB in total.
- Complex or merged tables, equations, handwriting, annotations, form controls and exact typography are not reconstructed.
- Raster pictures enter the reading flow. Artwork overlapping text is omitted from editable output. Vector artwork requires Page images.
- OCR does not replace an existing text layer. If that layer is broken, try exporting a fresh PDF from its source.

Try a document with something to check
Try a sample opens a synthetic three-page PDF. It includes a styled report with a table, two reading columns and a scanned page.
Use it to compare output modes and inspect OCR before opening your own document. The guide explains why these different pages need different treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF to Word converter free without signing up?
Yes. Conversion and local OCR are free. There is no daily conversion quota or watermark. You can open one PDF up to 100 MB and 500 pages, then export up to 200 pages per Word file. Your device supplies the memory.
Can I turn a scanned PDF into editable Word text?
Yes. Choose the scan language and press Read scans with OCR. It reads selected pages that have no text layer, up to 50 per run. Check names, figures and spelling afterwards. Unread pages are kept as pictures, with a warning that their words are not editable.
Will my PDF keep its formatting in Word?
Editable Word rebuilds basic font styles, headings, lists, simple aligned tables and supported pictures. It estimates structure from positions. Fonts, spacing and complex layouts can change. Choose Page images to keep the visible page as a picture. Words in that picture cannot be edited.
Does my PDF get uploaded anywhere?
No. Your PDF, password, recognised text, edits and Word file stay in this tab. OCR loads an engine and language model from floi’s model host. Your pages are not sent there. Only conversion preferences can save to an optional signed-in account.
Does this create DOC or DOCX files?
It creates DOCX, the modern Word document format. It does not create the older binary DOC format. Open the DOCX in a word processor if you need to save another format.
Can I convert only a few PDF pages to Word?
Yes. Enter page positions such as 1, 3-5 in Pages to convert, then press Apply. Blank means all pages. The page strip shows which pages are outside your export. Page positions can differ from numbers printed on the document.
Can I open a PDF that needs a password?
Enter its opening password when prompted. A wrong password lets you try again. The password is cleared after submission and never saved. You need permission to use the document; the tool does not recover unknown passwords.
Can I convert PDFs on a phone or Mac?
The tool runs in your browser and does not need a desktop app. Use the file picker on a phone, or drop a PDF on a computer. Large documents and OCR depend on available memory. Start with fewer pages on a phone.
