How to design readable social media posts

One clear thought, a recognisable signature and enough room for the words to breathe.

Start with what someone should read first

Give one message the largest type. Treat the supporting line and your branding as separate, smaller jobs.

  1. Write the main point before choosing a template. Remove any sentence that belongs in the caption instead.
  2. Choose the canvas ratio for the destination. Reflow the words when the ratio changes.
  3. Use one main typeface and one accent colour. Add texture at a strength that leaves the letters clear.
  4. Add your name or company signature. Export and inspect the actual file at feed size.

Choose a design workflow by the job

A focused quote maker suits repeatable typography. A full design app gives you more control over individual objects.

Floi Social StudioOriginal thoughts, quotes and announcements with the same signature across several sizes.Fixed compositions. No video, shared documents or saved image assets.
Adobe Express or CanvaLarge template libraries, multi-page designs, stock content and team workflows.Account and plan features vary. Review export and branding options before committing to a workflow.
PostzmakerA browser layer editor with text, shapes, icons and ready-made layouts.More individual objects to manage when you only need one thought and a signature.
Figma or a desktop design appA precise company system with bespoke layouts and reusable design components. You build and maintain the layout rules yourself.

We opened five competing editors on 25 October 2026. Adobe exposed a much larger template catalogue, while Postzmaker offered freeform layers. A smaller focused editor can reduce choices, but it does not replace those broader capabilities.

Keep a small brand system you can repeat

Repeat your typeface, accent and signature placement. Change the message without redesigning your identity each time.

A personal signature

Use a portrait, your name and a short role. A handle gives someone a way to recognise your next post.

A company signature

Use a transparent logo, a company name and a short tagline. Preserve the logo’s proportions and clear space.

Both, when useful

Pair the author’s portrait with the company logo for a founder note or team announcement. Reduce footer detail when space is tight.

Separate the brand recipe from its files. Floi remembers text, colours and typeface in a brand kit. Portraits and logos must be reopened because image bytes are kept only in the tab.

More pixels are different from larger letters

A headline’s displayed size depends on its share of the image width.

Worked exampleCalculation at a 390 px display width
86 px headline on a 1080 px canvas86 × 390 ÷ 1080 = about 31.1 displayed pixels.
Same design exported at 2×172 × 390 ÷ 2160 = the same 31.1 displayed pixels.
Automatic fitting reduces it to 38 px38 × 390 ÷ 1080 = about 13.7 displayed pixels.

These are geometry examples, calculated on 25 October 2026. They are not measurements of reading comfort. Your font, contrast, eyesight and destination’s rendering also matter.

When the words become small, shorten the text or use a taller canvas. Exporting more pixels preserves detail, but cannot fix a crowded composition.

What one real exported card weighs

We saved the same Bengali typography card in three formats on 25 October 2026. Each file was 1080 × 1350 pixels.

FormatEncodingObserved file size
PNGLossless253,222 bytes
JPG94% quality211,100 bytes
WebP94% quality122,550 bytes

Method: Chrome on macOS exported a dark-grid design with Bengali text at 1× using Noto Sans Bengali. It had two headline lines and a text brand signature. No photograph was included. These files came from the initial renderer, before the language selector was added. Font and layout updates can change their byte sizes. We inspected the saved files and dimensions. These are one design’s results, not a general size or quality ranking.

All six preset sizes also exported as separate PNGs inside one ZIP. That confirms output dimensions, not how a social platform will crop or recompress them.

Use texture behind the message

Keep texture quieter than the smallest text. A grid should create atmosphere without looking like strokes through the letters.

  • Dark grid: use light text, a restrained grid and one warm accent. Leave the main text area free of extra badges.
  • Paper editorial: use a warm background, dark serif type and fine grain. Let whitespace separate the heading from the signature.
  • Soft gradient: check both ends of the blend. A colour that works under one line can weaken another.
  • Photo background: crop to keep faces visible. A colour overlay can quiet detail behind the words.

For a solid colour pair, the contrast checker can help you assess text against its background. A single ratio cannot describe a textured photograph or gradient, so inspect the full composition too.

Choose your language before refining the type

Choose Language in Text to see matching fonts first. Templates describe visual styles and keep your language choice.

Social Studio hosts Noto families for European scripts, Bengali, Devanagari, Arabic, Chinese, Armenian, Georgian and Hebrew. Font subsets load when your words need them. The language setting does not translate your text.

  1. Choose a matching typeface. For example, use Noto Sans Bengali for Bengali or Noto Nastaliq Urdu for Urdu.
  2. Check vowel marks, conjuncts and line breaks. Arabic, Bengali and Devanagari keep zero letter spacing to preserve joining. Increase line height when marks feel crowded.
  3. Use Auto writing direction for mixed scripts, or choose an explicit direction. Arabic, Urdu and Hebrew read right to left. Latin company names keep their own letter order.
  4. Open the exported image and check the same words again. Emoji and scripts outside the bundled fonts can still use device-specific fallback fonts.

Finish with the destination’s actual preview

Open the saved image before publishing. The platform may crop or recompress it.

CheckWhat to look for
Small displayMain words read without zooming. Footer details remain secondary.
Edges and cropYour name, logo and qualifying words survive the platform preview.
Image descriptionInclude the words and necessary visual context. An image of text is not a substitute for accessible text.
Source and permissionAttribute borrowed words and use images you have permission to share. A template does not grant rights to a photograph or quotation.

An address printed in a PNG is not clickable. Put the useful link in the surrounding post or profile where the destination supports it.

Frequently asked questions

Should I export a quote image as PNG or JPG?

Start with PNG for text and flat graphics. JPG can suit a photograph with a short headline when file size matters. Inspect the actual saved file at feed width. A smaller file is only useful if the letters remain clear.

Will doubling the resolution make small text easier to read?

It can make the same letters sharper, but it does not make them look larger at the same display width. Change the composition, remove words or use a taller canvas when the text is too small.

Can I use one design for every social platform?

You can keep the same colours, fonts and signature. Recompose each ratio so lines wrap well and important content survives the destination’s crop. Check that platform’s current preview and safe areas before publishing.
