How to extract audio from a video

Use a browser for one local file, a phone editor for a quick project, or ffmpeg when you need scripts and codec control.

The short answer

Open the extract audio from video tool, drop in your file, set a range and choose an output. Keep the original track when the codec can be copied. Choose MP3 for a compact file or WAV for uncompressed editing.

The source video stays useful because the tool reads it rather than changing it. The result is a separate audio file, so you can archive the video and share the smaller sound file.

Extract audio in a browser

Choose a file you have permission to use. The browser tool accepts videos up to 1 GB, then shows the audio codec and lets you preview the range before export. This matters because an MP4 can contain AAC, MP3, Opus or another track, and those choices affect whether copying is possible.

  1. Open the local video

Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV into the tool. A video without an audio track cannot produce an audio file.

  2. Choose the range

Drag the start and end handles or type seconds. Preview the selection once so the saved file begins and ends where you expect.

  3. Pick an output

Keep original avoids a new encode when the codec fits. MP3 is the portable choice. WAV is the uncompressed editing choice.

A measured five-second example

I ran the included synthetic fixture through the browser tool on 8 October 2026. The test used Chrome 154.0.8037.98 on macOS 27.0.1, arm64 MacBookPro18,2. The input was 320 × 180 H.264 video with mono AAC at 44.1 kHz. The tool used the complete five-second range, and MP3 used its default 192 kb/s setting.

OutputBytesMeasured durationWhat was written
Keep original, M4A62,2905.000000 sAAC copied into an audio-only container
MP3120,9995.041625 sNew 192 kb/s MP3 encode
WAV441,0424.999977 s16-bit PCM at 44.1 kHz

The MP3 duration includes encoder padding. It was 1.94 times the M4A size because the source AAC used 96 kb/s and the new MP3 used 192 kb/s. The WAV contains 220,499 samples, one short of five seconds at 44.1 kHz. Your source codec, channel count, duration and chosen bitrate will change these numbers.

What “keep original” means

A video file is a container. It can hold a video stream and an audio stream. A copy operation removes the video stream and writes the audio stream to a compatible audio container. The samples are not decoded and encoded again, so the audio quality does not change.

A copy can still move a trim boundary. Encoded audio is stored in packets, and a packet may begin just before the time you entered. If the cut must land exactly on a sample, decode the range and write WAV instead.

MP3 versus WAV

MP3 saves space by discarding information that the encoder predicts people will hear less. It is the practical choice for a phone, a message or a transcript upload. Use 192 kb/s as a sensible starting point for mixed speech and music.

WAV stores uncompressed PCM samples. It is much larger, but it gives an editor a simple source to cut, process or measure. WAV cannot restore detail that was already removed before the video reached you.

Extract audio with ffmpeg

When the source track and destination container are compatible, this command copies the audio without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:a:0 -c:a copy output.m4a

To make an MP3, ask ffmpeg to decode and encode the audio:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:a:0 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.mp3

To export WAV for editing, use:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:a:0 -c:a pcm_s16le output.wav

Phone workflows

On iPhone, save the clip in Files before opening a browser tool. Photos can share a video into an editor, but that editor may keep the project in its own library. On Android, use Files or Gallery to select the local clip, then check the export location after the browser finishes.

Phones have less memory available to a browser tab than desktops. A short MP4 with AAC is a safer test than a long 4K recording. If the browser cannot decode the audio, use a desktop tool or ffmpeg.

What this method does not solve

Extraction keeps the mixed audio track. It does not isolate a singer from a backing track, remove background noise or download a video from a URL. Use a source you are allowed to copy, then use an audio editor or a separate cleanup tool for those jobs.

Frequently asked questions

Is extracting audio the same as converting video to MP3?

They overlap, but they are not the same operation. Extracting can copy an encoded audio track without changing it. Making an MP3 decodes the source and writes a new lossy file. The right choice depends on the audio codec and the file you need next.

Can I extract audio from a video without losing quality?

Yes, when you copy the original audio stream into a container that supports it. A WAV export is uncompressed after decoding, but it cannot recover detail already lost in the source. MP3 always creates a new lossy encode.

How do I extract audio from a video on an iPhone?

Use the Files app to keep a local video, then open a browser tool that accepts the file. Some editor apps can detach audio inside a project. A browser file tool avoids sending the clip to an upload service when it performs the extraction locally.

How do I extract audio from a video on Android?

Save the video in Files or Gallery, then choose it in a browser tool or a video editor. Android browsers differ in the codecs and memory they expose. A short MP4 with AAC is the safest starting point.
