How to make a meme from a photo
Find the expression, write a short setup and leave room for the punchline.
Free toolMeme GeneratorTurn your photo into a meme. Move the captions, try a caption band and save a PNG or JPG without a watermark.Make a memeStart with the picture, then the words
Choose a photo whose expression already tells part of the joke. Add one short line that sets up the situation. Use a second line only if it adds a twist.
In the meme generator, open your picture or start with Office cat. Write the captions, choose a layout and check the preview before saving. You can do this in your phone’s browser or on a computer.
Choose where the caption belongs
Use text over the image when there is quiet space. Use a caption band when the words would cover a face.
| Layout | Use it when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Classic top and bottom | The image has clear space at its edges. Two lines deliver a setup and a twist. | A large outline helps on a busy background, but cannot rescue text covering the subject. |
| Caption above the image | The joke reads as a sentence followed by a visual reaction. | The saved image becomes taller. Check the crop in the app where you plan to post it. |
| Labels inside the picture | You are comparing two things or naming different people or objects. | Place each label near its subject. Dragging is useful; position sliders help with small moves. |
A worked example: the office cat
The original Office cat starter gives you a face in the middle and a laptop below it. The joke can live in the margins.
Try the long version
Type “When someone schedules another meeting to discuss the meeting we had yesterday”. It says the whole situation, but asks the picture to carry too many words.
Cut it to the turn
Try “THIS MEETING COULD HAVE” above the cat and “BEEN A MEME” below it. The expression supplies the frustration.
Try a caption band
Choose White band and write “Me, joining the meeting about the meeting.” in Caption 1. Leave Caption 2 empty. The full photo stays visible below the sentence.
This is a reproducible editing exercise, not a claim about what will go viral. Try both versions at the size your friends will actually see.
Make meme text readable on a phone
Read the preview at a small size before sending it. If you have to zoom in, cut words or make the caption larger.
For a reaction photo or cut-out, choose Add photo in the meme generator. Place it over the template and resize from a corner. Keep original proportions on to preserve its shape. A transparent PNG can reveal the template around the subject. The tool does not remove the photo’s background for you.
Use fewer words
Automatic fitting prevents overflow by reducing type size. It cannot decide which words to remove. Keep the detail that makes the joke specific.
Match contrast to the image
White text with a dark outline can cross light and dark areas. A solid caption band gives the words a consistent background.
Keep the expression clear
The face often carries half the joke. Move a caption, make its box narrower or place it outside the picture.
Make a meme on iPhone or Android
Open the tool in your phone’s browser and choose Open image. Select a photo, write the captions and save the result.
You can drag captions with a finger. Choose Position if you prefer sliders. The settings scroll below the preview on a narrow screen. Choosing a caption band handles placement automatically. Your browser may put the saved file in Files or Downloads; its sharing options depend on your device.
A caption baked into a picture is not accessible text. Add a short image description or repeat the joke as text when sharing somewhere that supports it.
Choose PNG or JPG
Choose PNG when crisp lettering matters most. Try JPG for a photo-heavy meme when you need a smaller file.
| Choice | What to expect |
|---|---|
| PNG | No lossy encoding during export. It can be larger with detailed photographs. |
| JPG | Lossy encoding can soften small text and outlines. Compare the saved image before sending it. |
| Original width | Preserves the source width within the tool’s 4096-pixel edge limit. Adding a band can make the image taller. |
| 1080 or 720 pixels | A deliberate smaller size can reduce file weight. Enlarging a small source cannot restore missing detail. |
When another editor is a better fit
Choose the editor around the job. floi offers 230 popular templates alongside original starters and your own pictures. A full design editor can help when you need more complex compositions.
We exercised these browser editors in November 2026 using a synthetic picture or a public template. The notes below describe those tested flows. They are not a complete feature or privacy audit.
| Editor | A reason to choose it | Observed tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Memegenscript | A large famous-template collection, with image layers and rotation. | You choose a template before entering its editor. |
| Stax | Original drawings, public-domain images and caption bands, plus WebP output. | Its longer page and control list need more scrolling. |
| W3Schools | A direct two-caption flow for your own picture. | Tutorial navigation and advertising surround the editor. |
What to check before sharing
Save the finished image and read it once in the app where you will share it. Check that the words fit, the face stays visible and the crop still makes sense.
Only use pictures you have permission to share. This tool does not grant rights to someone else’s photograph. Popular templates are sourced from Imgflip and served by floi, so editing does not need a live template service.
