How to paraphrase without changing the meaning
Check what a sentence claims before deciding whether its new wording is better.

Write down the facts, conditions and level of certainty that must survive. Rephrase the passage, then compare those details against the original. Reading only the new version makes a fluent mistake surprisingly easy to miss.
- Identify who did what, when, and under which conditions.
- Keep names, quantities, technical terms and source references visible.
- Rewrite the idea in a structure that fits your reader.
- Check the new version against the original, one claim at a time.
- Read it aloud and make the final edit yourself.
Three small changes that alter the claim
These deliberately constructed examples isolate common review problems. They are editorial examples, not outputs attributed to an AI model.
| Original | Misleading rewrite | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Members can borrow up to five books. | Members can borrow five books. | The upper limit became a fixed quantity. |
| The new schedule may reduce waiting times. | The new schedule reduces waiting times. | A possibility became an established effect. |
| Only members who book before Friday receive a discount. | Members receive a discount before Friday. | The booking condition disappeared. |
A better rewrite keeps the constraint
“Members may borrow no more than five books” changes the phrasing while preserving the limit. “The revised schedule could shorten waits” retains uncertainty. For the discount, keep the condition explicit: “Book before Friday to receive the member discount.”
A word comparison is useful, but incomplete
A comparison can reveal that “may” disappeared. It cannot decide whether that omission is justified. Similarly, a numeric check can flag “9” becoming “nine”, even though those forms may mean the same thing.
Protecting a product name avoids one class of error. It does not prove that the model described the product correctly. A clean details panel should never replace reading the result.
Choose the method for the passage
Manual editing suits a short, sensitive sentence. AI can offer alternatives when you are stuck, but the result still needs review.
| Method | Useful for | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Manual rewrite | Precise claims, quotations and a distinctive voice. | You do all the drafting and comparison. |
| Hosted paraphraser | Devices without a suitable GPU, broader language support and longer texts. | Remote processing and service-specific limits. Check the applicable privacy terms. |
| Local browser AI | Short passages you want to process on your own device. | A substantial first download, GPU requirements and variable output quality. |
What we observed in a simple competitor test
On 27 September 2026, we submitted the same synthetic library announcement in Standard mode to four public tools. We used Chrome on macOS without signing in. This is one worked example, not a ranking of overall quality.
The library will open at 9 am on Saturday. Members can borrow up to five books for three weeks. Please return them on time so that other readers can enjoy them.
Scribbr and QuillBot retained the facts and expanded the 31-word input to 36 and 37 words. Grammarly also produced a longer version. LanguageTool highlighted changes and advanced its free-use counter from 0/3 to 1/3.
The lesson is practical: different wording does not necessarily make an already clear announcement shorter or better. Compare the result with your goal, not with a target number of changed words.
What this test does not establish
One short passage cannot establish accuracy for academic prose, technical writing or another language. Outputs can change between runs. We did not measure competitor latency, mobile performance or network privacy from these interactions.
Paraphrasing and attribution
Keep the citation when the idea comes from another source. Rewording changes expression, not ownership of the underlying idea. Follow the requirements of your school, employer or publisher, including any rules about AI assistance.
For academic work, distinguish a paraphrase from a quotation and a summary. A quotation keeps exact wording. A summary deliberately leaves out detail. A paraphrase should retain the relevant meaning while expressing it differently.
Sources and model notes
The tested tools were Scribbr, QuillBot, Grammarly and LanguageTool. Their limits and interfaces can change.
floi uses Qwen3 with thinking disabled and a quantised browser export. The smaller model reduces the download burden. Neither option is claimed to be the best paraphraser across all writing tasks.
